Matt Jenson, Keyboard

Matt Jenson is on sabbatical from Berklee College of Music in Boston where he’s been teaching for nearly 20 years. He’s had a long time association with the Bay area having done many performances and teaching at the Jazz School (Berkeley) and at Jazz Camp West. He completed a masters degree in jazz piano and composition at New England Conservatory of Music where he studied with Geri Allen, Dave Holland, Ran Blake and later with Eddie Palmieri and Donna McElroy (for voice). Jazz and blues form the backbone of nearly everything Matt teaches and performs but his deepest loves come from African diasporic music from the Caribbean, namely Reggae and Afro-Cuban music. His love of reggae led him to create the “Music and Life of Bob Marley” class at Berklee and the class has brought him many deep associations with those in Marley’s inner circle (Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and China Smith most notably) and in the international reggae scene in general. He is currently touring with the Bay area powerhouse reggae-jazz fusion band, Groundation (playing Hammond organ, clavinet and synth) and he leads his own reggae band, the Liquid Revolution and his reggae-jazz group Mix Up Mix Up. His love of Afro Cuban music has taken him to Havana, Cuba and he teaches an Afro Cuban piano lab, freelances in many salsa and Latin jazz bands and co-led the reggae/Latin fusion group Rebel Tumbao. He is currently co leading an incredible cultural/musical immersion trip to Jamaica each February called “Inside Reggae.” Matt is a gifted and enthusiastic educator who loves to pass his knowledge on to inspired students of all ages.
